Coastguard Northern Region is running school holiday programmes late September-early October in Auckland and Whangarei to help teens aged over 12 years learn about safe boating and provide the opportunity to gain qualifications and NZQA credits.
There are from three components to choose from: Day Skipper (4 days) – an introductory course for all boaties, with the option of adding the practical on-water Day Skipper (2.5 hours); Marine VHF Radio Operator (2 days).
Check out the dates, venues and enrolment here
Day Skipper – 4 days. This is an introductory course for all boaties. Applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, PWCs, sea kayaks and waka. Those who successfully complete the assessment can apply for Unit Standard 26542 (level 2, 6 credits) to be added to their record of learning.
The Day Skipper portion of the programme will typically run from 9:00am to 1:30pm. From 1:30pm to 3:00pm we will spend time learning about Coastguard, Search and Rescue and other boating related topics.
Day Skipper optional extra “On Water Experience” – 2.5 hours. This classroom rocks because you’ll be aboard a Coastguard Training Vessel for a 2.5 hour practical learning experience. Students will have the opportunity to put into practice the essential boating knowledge from the Day Skipper Course while participating in crewing or skippering the vessel.
Marine VHF Radio Operator – 2 days. This is the minimum qualification required to operate a marine VHF Radio in anything other than an emergency. It will cover routine operation, how it can assist with safety as well as distress and urgency calling. Unlike the adult course, this two-day course gives us more time on scenarios and exercises to help retain the information.
With this qualification there is nothing stopping your child from getting involved as the onboard designated Trip Report person. They will develop confidence on the radio which is a useful skill they will carry into their future.
Those who successfully complete the assessment can apply for Unit Standard 19491 (level 3, 3 credits) to be added to their record of learning.
