Who Won our
Post Your View Winter Warmer
Package? |
 |
 Congratulations
to Neil Robinson, the Principal of
Blockhouse Bay School who won our Winter
Warmer Draw Package.
Your Wine, Chocolates plus Bryce Courtenay
Best Seller is on it's way to you.
For his comprehensive comments on our Post
Your View on National Standards
Neil's comments:
Wow, where can I start?
-
League tables
can and will be created. They will compare how many students
you have above, at below and well below the Standard. This
information will come from the schools. Some of the issues
with this are:
1.1
Some schools
may or may not interpret the Standards the same as another
school because many of the Standard are currently too vague.
1.2
Some schools
may or not interpret the vague standards the same on purpose -
because their rolls depend on having new children enrol.
1.3
That parents
are more likely to judge a school on stated performance and not
on value added - just like they do with secondary.
-
That the
Standards need to be trailed - of course they do. Some
aspects have been changed already (and they are apparently
not even being trailed!). There are so many issues with them
that a trial needs to happen. Do people not remember the
problems we had when we first brought in NCEA? Under funded
/ inconsistency etc. etc.
-
Value added. We
have always had the ability to assess where children are,
how much improvement has happened and where we need to go
next. This is not new! If people were not doing this, what
was ERO saying about them?
-
Changing
Schools. If a boy arrives at my school, I do not ask him if
he was in the Triangles group for maths. I find out what
assessment method the last school was using and start there.
I anticipate that he might not perform at that level
initially and by the time he has settled in, the teacher is
likely to know where he is at anyway.
-
But we need
Aspirational Standards! No we don't. If I had a child at
Stanine 5, I would not say, "my work here is done". I would
try and move them higher. If we are saying that to meet a
Standard, a child has to be Stanine 7, is it honest to say a
child is Below if they are Stanine 6? Will parents grasp
that being in the top 40% of children in the country (Stanine
6) is still Below?
-
Great that you
moved your children from Stanine 3 to Stanine 5 - top
effort! You clearly did not need National Standards to do
this, if you are scoring them with Stanines.
-
But we will get
what we have always got! Cool! Our 15 year olds are near the
top of the world standards according to OECD results in
Maths, Reading and Science. We also haven't slipped off the
pace despite increasing social disadvantage. Can we do
better? Sure we can. I just bet there are schools that need
more guidance than others. Wasn't ERO put in place to spot
these? Will these vague, waffley, unscientific and unproven
standards and league tables help? No. We will be in the same
position as all of the other countries that have tried this
and we will toss them out after a decade of narrowing the
curriculum.
I could go on, but you get the point. Neil Robinson

Who
is the Coolest Man in Your School?
He could be the Coolest Man in School in NZ!

Nominate him and be in to WIN this Prize Pack
And present it to him for Father's Day 2011 |
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S
To
Brent (Nickname Harry) Harrison
Head of Special Needs Unit
Levin School
Manawatu
You are TSTNZ's COOLEST MAN IN SCHOOL 2011
Many thanks to the nominator Wendy Whitelaw Office
Manager at Levin School
who wrote the following about Brent/Harry
Harry is a fantastic role model to all of us.
His job in the Special Needs Unit is one that
only a special person with his qualities could
handle. He shows great love, understanding and
compassion to all of the students and their
whanau. He is at work by 5a.m. every morning
busy preparing special activites they can do. He
will go the extra mile to ensure that his
charges and their whanau get all the help they
need not just for attending school but also in
their own homes where he will visit to help
implement these plans. He is greatly respected
and loved by everyone. Harry was hospitalised
last year with a major scare, but even when
resting at home he kept in contact with his
charges both at school and home to ensure all
was running well for them. He gives 150% of
himself and is seemingly never off duty.
In choosing the finalists for this competition
preference was given to those who regluarly
perform services that go beyond the call of
general school duties.
Many thanks to all those who entered a nominee.
Prize Pack going to Brent/Harry Harrison
contains
The Beautiful Coffee Table Book "Fly Fishing in
New Zealand Lakes"

Understanding NCEA
Winners
A relatively short and very useful guide for students and
parents

Thank you for
all your entries, we have now posted all available books to
the winners.
Principal Richard Baker's comments:
NCEA remains a mystery to many parents and employees as
it is so far removed from the educational qualifications
that they had experience gaining. The flexibility of
this qualification is a reflection of the changing
nature of our society and the employment market where
jobs change continuously and new ones are created. To
impart some understanding of this to the wider community
is to help New Zealand grower socially and economically.
I don’t need one just one of these books on
"Understanding NCEA" that TSTNZ is so kindly offering, I
need one for each family in our community in order to
help facilitate change now. We can not wait for this
generation of students to grow into the parents of the
future and the understanding that will bring.

TSTNZ
& NZ Schools' Male Role Model 2008 wins a Father’s
Day Giftbox full of goodies
Congratulations to the Staff at Hamilton Boys High
who
sent us the winning nomination for
Mr John Prentice
Choosing a Winning Nomination
As you know all the entries we had were great and
all those nominated deserve an award, whether it was
the caretaker who stopped a burglary or the
principal who invites students to come and show him
their work and always has time for students and
staff.
The
winning nomination email is displayed below
|
|
A
special man at Hamilton Boys High School.
I
would like to nominate Mr John Prentice, our
gardener.
John came to our school several years ago, after
working as a Science teacher and HOD through his
career. He took over the task of crafting our very
ordinary gardens into something very special.
Our school was built in 1955 and John has created
for us a garden design based on his detailed
research about the era, and has spent several years
creating and tending all of our large grounds in
this style.
With a roll of over 1600 boys, one would expect a
few challenges with maintaining the perfection of
our flower and rose beds, as well as some very young
and vulnerable mass plantings. In fact, the students
see the passion John has for his school and his
vision, and they appreciate and value what he has
done.
The improved appearance of our school through this
has ensured a very real pride in the boys for their
world, and has meant that they appreciate the
importance of caring for their space.
However, it is not just for this contribution that I
nominate John. Whenever we have boys who have been
stood down, they are expected to complete community
service for the school. For more serious offences,
this can be for up to a week in the holiday break.
John takes these boys under his wing, and provides
them with the opportunity to learn some real skills,
feel a genuine pride in making a difference and
righting the wrong. He is a superb mentor to them,
talking through their issues and providing some
wonderful advice and care.
I know that our whole community would affirm this
nomination. John is a very special man and we are
fortunate to have him in our world.
Thank you for this opportunity to nominate John
Prentice, gardener at Hamilton Boys’ High School

And
the Winning Nominee is
Josephine Maplesden of Hamilton Girl’s High School
In recognition of her the Girls and Staff will present her
with
'The Mother’s Day Basket'
Josephine was chosen because of this email that we received
from Sarah Hewitt:
I would like to nominate Josephine Maplesden from Hamilton
Girls’ High School for this competition.
She is a fantastic mother to 2 teenage and adult children,
as well as a mother for many students at HGHS and surrogate
mother for the staff under her in the Social Studies
department. Jo has many roles and responsibilities within
our school. She is an HOD, lead learning coach, house
committee member along with several other things, she also
manages NZQA work, president of the national media
association and general motherly duties like managing her
daughters under water hockey team. Since some of us in her
department have been under her from the start of our careers
we really do call her our 2nd mother. At times she has feed
us, counselled us, dealt with tricky situations for us,
supported us, celebrated our successes with us and is always
there for us. I can ring her and she would drop anything for
us, just like she does for her children. She thoroughly
deserves this award.
Thanks
Sarah Hewitt
HGHS
Many thanks to all those school staff members who sent in
the scores of nominations that we received.
It was a difficult task picking just one winner out of all
these wonderful women and they all deserve a prize but we only had one to
give-away; therefore we suggest that you each take time to award them yourselves
with a simple card, bunch of flowers and/or box of chocolates.
Look out for our Term 2 Winter Warmer Box of Goodies
Have a good Term 2 in all you do
