New book for angry teens

Many parents know that living with a teenager can sometimes be like sharing a house with an angry beast. In fact one in 10 students will suffer from a mental health issue that directly impacts on their education and health.

'I Just Get So … Angry!' (Exisle Publishing, $29.99, May release) is a new graphic novel from school counsellors Tim and Sandra Bowden, developed to help young people cope when they feel out of control.

In a New Zealand first, “I Just Get So … Angry!” makes accessible to teenagers and their parents the highly-effective principals Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT (made famous by Dr Russ Harris’s bestselling “The Happiness Trap”) has proven useful in teaching young people effective, flexible strategies for dealing with the stressors in their life.

As author Tim Bowden notes, looking for ways not to feel angry is as unrealistic as “hoping to never feel sad, worried, or even happy, ever again”. Rather, in “I Just Get So … Angry!” teen readers are encouraged to be mindful of their emotions and learn to take their anger along for the ride.

By following the main character, Andy, through his encounter with the Beast (symbolising his inner anger, hurt, fear and resentment), teenagers will learn how to similarly deal with their own issues, develop a more resilient mental attitude and achieve better emotional balance.

The exercises and resources included in the back of “I Just Get So … Angry!” will further help parents, counsellors and young people to tame the angry beasts that torment us all from time to time.

Tim has 14 years’ experience as a high school teacher and works as a trained school counsellor. He uses ACT principles when counselling young people in both primary and secondary schools.
Sandra taught in primary schools for 13 years before retraining as a school counsellor, her vocation for the past nine years. She is also a registered psychologist who has embraced the principles of ACT. A self-taught artist, Sandra has created the artwork for the book. Tim and Sandra also co-authored the highly successful 2010 release “I just Want To Be... Me” and live in New South Wales, Australia.
