Saint Clair Pioneer Block 18 Snap Block Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Snap Block would seem a good name for a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which is known for its crisp flavours. The name Snap Block is coincidental though, with the vineyard situated on the site of a former orchard growing Snap variety apples. As you would expect from a former orchard, the soil is very fertile. It is also free draining and produces extremely healthy vines.

The vineyard in question is situated in Marlborough’s Lower Wairau area. It is a cooler area that tends to have a longer ripening season.

The grapes were carefully monitored during ripening, and once they were deemed to be at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness were harvested in the cool of the evening, then transported directly to the winery. At the winery, the fruit was pressed off immediately to minimise skin contact and juice deterioration. After allowing some time to settle, the juice was fermented in 100% stainless steel at cool temperatures using a variety of selected yeasts. After the ferment, the wine was stabilised and prepared for bottling.

I found this pale straw coloured wine to have wonderful passionfruit, blackcurrant and citrus aromas. The palate I found intense, with flavours of blackcurrant and passionfruit and notes of minerals and herbs leading to a long, lingering finish. I would recommend this wine with a fresh, grilled salmon or lightly spiced Asian seafood dish.
