Saint Clair Pioneer Block 18 Snap Block Sauvignon Blanc 2008

Saint Clair Family Estates has some unusual names for the blocks in their Pioneer Block range, often referring to the former use of the property. The name Snap Block could however refer to a number of things, without anything in particular coming to mind. It is actually called Snap Block because it was formerly used by an orchard to grow ‘Snap’ variety apples, therefore having a history of producing quality fruit.

Block 18 is situated in the Lower Wairau sub-region of Marlborough, east of Blenheim. It is an even, flat site with fertile, free draining soils and cooler temperatures leading to a longer ripening period. The vines on the site are extremely healthy, and this is the third year of cropping on the Snap Block site.

The fruit from this site was carefully monitored during the ripening stage and harvested in the cool of the evening when it was determined that the fruit was at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness. Once harvested, the fruit was transported directly to the winery and pressed off immediately to minimise skin contact and juice deterioration.

After settling, the juice from each batch was fermented using a variety of selected yeasts in stainless steel at cool temperatures to ensure fruit flavour and freshness was retained. After the ferment, the wine was stabilised and prepared for bottling. It was selected for a Pioneer Block for its power and intensity of flavour.

I found the 2008 vintage Saint Clair Snap Block Sauvignon Blanc to have a wonderful bouquet of passionfruit, grapefruit and blackcurrant. The palate had the same presence of blackcurrant and passionfruit in a vibrant mix, with underlying mineral and savoury notes. The finish is long and lingering.

Although drinking well now, it should cellar well for two years. I would recommend trying the 2008 Saint Clair Snap Block Sauvignon Blanc with poached salmon or a seafood salad.
