Huntaway Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008

Huntaway, the wine shares its name with that loyal and hard working farm dog that works the high country mustering sheep by barking. It is a strange name for this wine as it is not one for the dogs, nor is it rough around the edges as a huntaway can appear to be. I wouldn’t suggest that a wine is a loyal friend either, but rather something to be enjoyed with a meal.

The Huntaway brand is surprising in other ways too, having some wines from Gisborne, while this one comes from vines on a small parcel of land in the Lower Wairau Valley. The label of the wine also doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary. This is probably because the winemaker wants the wine to do the talking, I guess in a way therefore it is like the dog being judged on his own ability, it is just that Huntaway (the wine label) doesn’t make a big noise about it.

To grow grapes on their parcel of land in Marlborough, Huntaway doesn’t require irrigation. This gives their wine a richness, while still having those distinctly Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc characteristics.

I found this wine to be rich and concentrated. It has aromas of lime, capsicum, currant, apple and spice. On the palate, tangy citrus flavours blend well with gooseberry and blackcurrant. There are also distinctive herb notes, possibly thyme, and a lingering finish.

The label of the bottle notes that it is designed to compliment any food, but I would personally prefer it with seafood or a light salad. As with all Sauvignon Blanc, it is designed to be enjoyed while young.
