Saint Clair Pioneer Block 4 Sawcut Chardonnay

It is not often that a vineyard block is known as much for a walk as the wine, but this block, situated in the Ure Valley gets its name from the Sawcut Gorge, and a walking track through the gorge is included in the best 100 walks in New Zealand. If you do the walk, you will find yourself walking through the ‘Sawcut and out into a large open area, passing native flora and Fauna as well as fascinating geological structures. Like a good wine, you need to take some time in order to savour it properly.

If you are wondering where the Ure Valley is, and chances are that you are, it is situated approximately half way between Blenheim and Kaikoura. The area has exceptionally high limestone soils, giving the wine mineral characteristics, while it also has its own unique microclimate with the number of degree growing days being equivalent if not higher than Blenheim in most seasons.

Regular readers will recognise that Saint Clair’s Pioneer Block 4, the Sawcut block also produces a very nice Sauvignon Blanc. Actually three wines are produced on this block; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The topography and climate of the block are well suited for making distinctive, quality wines.

This vintage has been matured in French oak, to add the wonderful oak flavours and aromas to the wine. I also found the Pioneer Block 4 Sawcut Chardonnay to exhibit wonderful aromas of Peach and butterscotch. They were also present with the savoury oak notes in the palate, while the underlying mineral notes added complexity to this vibrant and fresh wine’s concentrated flavours.

It is drinking exceptionally well now and as for food, I would recommend it with Kaikoura Crayfish (maybe bought after going on the walk through the Sawcut Gorge) or with roast chicken.
