The Waikato
Coalfields
Museum welcomes
school visits.
The Museum holds
coalmining
collections from
the surrounding
district in a
property built
as the mine
manager’s house
for the Taupiri
Coal Mining
Company in 1890.
The Museum gardens
provide a pleasant lunch area, whilst displays inside include a reconstructed
mine tunnel and explore the lives of coalminers and their families who worked
and lived in the Waikato Coalfields. Film footage introduces visitors to
coalmining past and present, and original exhibits include mining machinery,
personal items on display in a typical coal miner’s parlour, kitchen and
bedroom, as well as many other photographs, documents and objects of interest.
The Museum has a
comprehensive
coal mining
archive with an
excellent
collection of
historic
photographs, and
an extensive
library of coal
mining books
covering
subjects such as
explosives,
ventilation, and
environmental
impact.
