Astronomy for Schools
Earth
and Sky, Ltd operating from Mt. John Observatory, Lake
Tekapo invite school groups to join us on a “Twilight
Expedition” to observe with amazing detail planets, star
clusters, and much more through powerful telescopes.
With the best skies in the country, and the assistance
of our Astronomy Guides, it’s the ideal environment to
explore the heavens above. Our young scholars will be
able to identify stars, constellations, and the
culturally significant aspects of our southern night
sky. On this tour students are invited to join us under
the famously dark Mackenzie night sky for a memorable
and enriching astronomical experience.
Ideally students return for a “Day-time Excursion” where
we we provide unparalleled views of the McKenzie Basin
from the snow-clad mountains of the Southern Alps,
including Mt Cook, to the radiate turquoise waters of
Lake Tekapo and we visit the research telescopes (past
and present), including New Zealand’s largest, the MOA
telescope. If weather permits, the sun, and even stars
are observable through a telescope, even in the
day-time.
To provide the most flexibility, other options are
available including:
“Experience Your Sky” – a new platform in which we bring
the night sky in all its wonder to a location near you.
Observe your night time sky like never before.
You bring the enthusiastic students, we enrich them by
providing the opportunity of a lifetime!
Each school group focuses on one of the programmes; this
supports a student’s experience by achieving learning
outcomes appropriate to their needs. By visiting at
different times (day and night) a number of unique
opportunities are available. We offer three different
options according to the amount of time you wish to have
with us, and there is always the full experience of both
night and day.
DECISION ONE:
Firstly, teachers will decide which of the following
programmes line up with their own Achievement
Objectives.
The three different programmes are:
"Our Solar System"
"Stars and Constellations"
"Earth and Beyond"
DECISION TWO: Next, choose which option best
suits your schedule.
