The Time Of My Life by Cecelia Ahern

Lucy Silchester finds a gold envelope lying on her carpet when she returns from work one day. It is an invitation to meet with Life, her life. She has been ignoring it, so it has requested a meeting face-to-face. Yes it does sound peculiar, but it so happens that Lucy has already read about this sort of thing in a magazine.

Lucy doesn't have time to make the date though, she is too busy despising her job, lying to her friends and avoiding her family. In fact it isn't the first time she ignores the invitation.

Inevitably though her life catches up with her though as she finds this is an appointment she cannot miss. Some of the choices she has made and stories she has told aren't what they seem and unless she learns to tell the truth about what really matters to her, the man calling himself her life, could expose all her deceptions in all their glory.

For me, I felt the book was an attempt to give an essentially Christian or religious message in a non-religious way. The message being to tell the truth and to focus on what is really important. The way it is presented in the book is a bit far fetched, as it would be possibly be a bit more understandable for a person's soul to make the appointment than their life, which will change with them. The characters in the book are not far fetched though. Lucy is very down-to-earth while life is not like what many would picture an angel like, but is portrayed as a grumpy man. The characters coupled with some excellent humour make it an enjoyable read, while the subject matter makes it a thought provoking one too.
