My Dear I Wanted To Tell You by Louisa Young

My Dear I Wanted To Tell You is an epic novel on the First World War, with a difference. It is as much about the women the soldiers left behind as it is about their own exploits. It is also the first book in a trilogy which explores the ways in which the events of that period affected and shaped the following generations.

The title of the book comes from a standard letter that was provided to all soldiers who were wounded and admitted to hospital, so they could inform their loved ones.

Riley Purefoy and Nadine Waveney were both only eighteen when the war broke out. They only want the chance to love and live, but the war seduces Riley and he leaves to fight for his country. Separation and the horrors of wartime prove a terrible test to their relationship and future. Peter Locke is Riley's CO and has left behind two women who love him, his wife Julia and his cousin, Rose.

While Peter and Riley are away fighting for their lives in the trenches, Nadine, Julia and Rose do what they can at home. Beautiful and innocent Julia prepares for his return home while Rose, a wartime nurse dedicates her life to helping the disfigured returning soldiers. Everyone is trying to keep hope alive in trying circumstances.

Will Nadine and Riley's love survive? Will Peter return home to Julia, and what will become of Rose, who has lost all hope of marriage, believing that all the good men are dead?

Louisa Young gives us an intriguing and memorable novel about a different side of war. She captures the tension, emotion and feelings of those concerned in a highly emotive tale that is sure to have readers waiting in anticipation for the second book.
