Rose isn't the only character with depth though, which is one reason why this series is so captivating. One of her friends, Bella, for instance is unruly and is attracted to the dark side. Her magic is inclined to throw tantrums too.

These things combine with some scary edge of the seat moments to make a thrilling read for those over 9 who can endure the occasional shiver of fear and love a good magical adventure.
