The Great
Bloke’s BBQ Cookbook by Kim Terakes
Kim Terakes spent twenty-five years in advertising, using it as an
excuse to have lunch in a restaurant every day and enjoy good food.
He has since given up the advertising career to devote his working
life entirely to the quest for good food, writing about food and
restaurants in Australian Gourmet Traveller, Vogue Entertaining, BRW,
SMH, Good Living and the Sunday Telegraph. He was also the
restaurant reviewer for the Sun-Herald for several years,
contributed to the Good Food Guide throughout the 1990’s and was the
food writer for GQ magazine for seven years. His first cookbook,
‘The Great Aussie Barbie Cookbook was one of two winners in the Best
Barbeque Book in the World category at the 2008 Gourmand Awards and
he currently has a weekly column in Australian newspapers the
Su-Herald and the Sunday Age.
According to Kim Terakes, when it comes to cooking, the needs of the
kiwi bloke are simple. He wants food that tastes great, makes him
look good and doesn’t take all day or numerous trips to the shops to
prepare. The Great Bloke’s BBQ Cookbook is a must for anyone who has
ever prodded a sausage over a flame and dreamed or something more,
or cooked a steak on a Barbie and wished he could cook something
more impressive (and possibly less burnt).
Kim’s book covers everything from the basics of cooking on a BBQ to
recipes for every occasion whether it is a family gathering, special
occasion or just a school-night meal. The recipes are uncomplicated,
unfussy, use the best fresh produce available and should work every
time. There are a mixture of old favourites and new dishes to try.
Some of them you might be amazed to learn you can cook on the
Barbie. He doesn’t just cover the mains either, but shows how you
can frame the perfect steak with tasty starters, healthy salads and
irresistible desserts.
What I like best about this book is its distinctly New Zealand
flavour and the names for some of the dishes which make them sound
more exotic and difficult than they are. As someone who uses a
barbecue a lot over summer myself, I can’t wait to impress friends
and family with some of the meals contained in this book, which are
easy to make but look complicated and as if they have been prepared
by a chef. This book should be a ‘must buy’ for anyone who owns a
BBQ.
