Containment by Vanda Symon

Containment is Vanda Symon’s third novel and features Same Shepherd, the same feisty young policewoman that was the central character in the other two books.

In Containment, Sam is training as a detective at Dunedin Central when she is assigned to investigate what seems to be a routine diving accident off the Otago coast. When the forensics results come back, they tell a different story however. They show that the man didn’t die from drowning and that the body was put in the wetsuit after death.

Could there be a connection between this case and another that Sam is investigating in which the citizens of Dunedin have been pillaging the wreckage of a container ship at the harbour entrance? As the story unfolds, the young detective has to make sense of a complex web of lies and violence. Will she uncover who is behind it all and who the real criminals are?

It is refreshing to read such a detective novel that is based in New Zealand, yet on a par with detective novels from the UK or USA. It is also interesting that Vanda chose Aramoana, a settlement familiar with most New Zealanders as being the site of our worst ever massacre, as the location where containers from the stricken ship are being washed ashore and looted. Sam is a very likeable character and the novel is very hard to put down, especially as you get caught in the web of lies and intrigue.
