Simone is twelve and things start to go wrong right from her birthday. Her mother is too busy arranging for both of them to move into her new boyfriend’s house to realise it is Simone’s birthday. Simone doesn’t like Ingvar (the boyfriend), his house, and the fact it is so far from town, what’s more she doesn’t want to leave her friends, the neighbours or the flat.

If that seems bad enough, it isn’t until the teacher at her new school mistakes Simone for a boy called Simon that the trouble really begins, and from there it doesn’t stop. All sorts of things start to go wrong like lost dogs, ducks in the classroom and stolen handbags. Simone is constantly getting into trouble too even though she doesn’t mean to, most of the time, anyway. This book just goes to show the world is full of dipsticks and fruitloops.

Ulf Stark blends his own abilities for witty storytelling and to spin a yarn to make his a hilarious novel of growing up. It is certainly not your usual coming of age novel, but is a hilarious tale of a tough yet sensitive girl who pretends to be a boy and over time comes to accept her family’s and her own eccentricities. Along the way she also learns a lot about life and love.
