Across The Universe by Beth Revis

Amy has left the life she loves for a world 300 years away. Trapped in space and frozen in time, Amy is bound for a new planet. Then fifty years before she is due to arrive, she is violently woken by a murderer. Now Amy is lost on board a ship where nothing makes sense and she has never felt more alone.

On board, she does have an ally. He is waiting for her, to protect her and more if she will let him.

Who can Amy trust amidst the secrets and lies? Somewhere on board the killer still roams free and onboard a spacecraft in the middle of the universe, there is no-where to hide.

Elder is destined to one day be responsible for the ship and all its inhabitants. At present he is being taught by Eldest what that means and what he will have to do when he becomes the Eldest as the hierarchy of the ship dictates. Discord is the greatest threat to the ship as it could lead to mutiny, so the elder system has been established, also there is only one race on Godspeed and no religion, but is it really the utopia it is meant to be? Elder sees it as more of a prison, is he right?

The ship also contains secrets including a mysterious level. And what exactly happened during The Plague, after which the leadership structure changed along with parts of the ship? Then there is the biggest secret of all, what happened the last time someone like Amy became unfrozen.

Across The Universe is written from the point of view of two people, each of whom is from a world and society alien to the other. It is a sci-fi thriller that will particularly appeal to teenagers over the age of 14. From the outset this book doesn’t promote a romantic view of space travel but a picture of a painful process to go through in order to escape to a better world. The author takes time to show the process of being frozen is painful and that not everything is going to plan or at least going the way they were led to believe.
