The Secret Football Club by Tom Palmer with illustrations by Brian Williamson

Lily, Zack, Khal and their friends love football. There are only two problems with that. The first is that they live in a city where there is no-where to play football and the second is that the new head teacher, Mr Edwards has banned all ball games from the school playground because he doesn’t want the students to get injured.

Their class teacher Mrs Baker gives them the idea of playing in secret and an old tennis court in woods on the school grounds provides what seems to be the perfect location, so the secret football club is formed. Things don’t go without incident however, so can the group keep their football club a secret, and can they do the seemingly impossible and get Mr Edwards to change his mind about allowing football in school?

This is an exciting book for those over six who love sport, particularly football. It contains some history of the game, and demonstrates how sometimes you have to think outside the square. The book also shows what good teamwork is about and what friendship means. The book also shows parents how sometimes children will be children no matter which rules are put in place for their safety.
