Dewey: The True
Story of a World Famous Library Cat by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter
At only a few weeks old, on the
coldest night of the year, a kitten was stuffed into the returned
book slot at the Spenser Public Library. The next morning, librarian
Vicky Myron found him and nursed him back to health, deciding there
and then that he would become the library mascot. And started to
call him Dewey. There was still no guarantee though that the local
council or the townsfolk would agree that having a cat in the
library was a good idea, nor was there any guarantee that Dewey
would make a good library cat.
Dewey has the ability to charm everyone he meets though and soon all
concerns are put aside as Dewey learns to love his new home and
spends each day spreading his own special brand of love to those who
enter the library and winning the hearts of everyone around him.
Dewey is the heart warming story of a library cat who inspires the
lives of those around him as well as people around the world.
Some of you will note that I have already reviewed a book about this
cat by the same authors. This one has been written for older readers
(in the seven to twelve age group) and gives a more detailed account
of Dewey’s antics as he comes to love his new home. It also tells of
some of the problems faced and overcome with having a cat in a
library.
Anyone who loves true stories of animals or loves a heart-warming
read will enjoy this story about a very likeable cat. It would be
extremely hard not to be touched by the story of Dewey, the
librarians who saved him and the love he gave in return.

Dewey There’s A Cat
In The Library by Vicki Myron and Bret Witter with illustrations by
Steve James
Dewey is based on the true story of a
cat found in a library return box in the US. Dewey is a cat with a
big heart, but when he is found in the book-drop slot of the library
on the coldest night of the year, he is just a tiny and very dirty
kitten. Vicky, the librarian makes a home for him in the library,
and in turn Dewey decides to be the best library cat he can be, but
what does a library cat do?
He soon finds that a library cat doesn’t just play games and make a
mess. Dewey also loves people but finds that the littlest ones like
to chase him, pull his tail and squeeze him tightly. He finds that
the library is a wonderful place and by trying to help people, he
makes this library even more wonderful.
Dewey A Cat In The Library is a story of a cat sharing its love,
told with good humour and wonderful illustrations that bring the
story even more vividly to life. The bold, bright and detailed
pictures are great for children to see if the book is being read to
a class, and it is a good book for reading to a class. There are
characters that children can relate to, and good messages about
kindness and helping others.
