Justice: Speaking Up For Crime's Silent Victims by Garth McVicar

Justice is Garth McVicar's own story. It explains how an ordinary farmer from Hawke's Bay became a spokesperson for the victims of violent crime. He noticed an upsurge in violent crime and what seemed to be unfair, lenient sentences that didn't take account of the victims. He took it upon himself to ask legislators hard questions and provide a voice for many silent victims of crime in New Zealand.

Journey with Garth as he reflects on 10 years of the Sensible Sentencing Trust, exploring where it has come from, where it is going and what it has achieved. You will be able to read about some of the victims the trust has helped and why this man has become one of the most recognised advocates for victims and families of violent crime in New Zealand.

Justice is not just Garth McVicar's personal story though. While it tells how he got involved and why, it also outlines the history of the Sensible Sentencing Trust. It looks at the impact the SSI has had on the NZ political landscape and contemplates its future. It also asks whether it has made any real difference and done what it set out to do.

Whether you agree with Garth or not, this book explains not only why he has taken the stance he has, but also why so many victims feel unjustly treated by our judicial system and politicians.
