101 Quick Tips Effective Communication by Debbie Mayo-Smith
Debbie Mayo-Smith is a columnist,
media commentator and one of the most sought after Australasian
business speakers. Her book offers 101 clear and concise tips for
effective communication covering conversations, sales, writing,
emailing, marketing, presenting, Powerpoint, negotiation and using
the telephone. She uses real life examples and advice from people
with a wide range of backgrounds including writers, speakers,
coaches and business leaders to demonstrate the ideas and make them
easier to understand. It is a small book that any adult can use and
understand.
Although the blurb at the back mentions that you can use these
techniques over the dinner table, this is essentially a book for
business. It tells the reader how to market themselves and their
company better in each of the mediums covered. Some of the suggested
tips will not work in all situations though. For example Debbie
suggests having three messages when speaking to the media and
inserting them whenever possible, especially if you are asked a
sticky question. While some media might leave it at that, some will
either cut it or push the interviewee to give a straight answer
making it look like the person had something to hide. Also another
suggestion of looking people straight in the eye only works with
western culture and would for example be considered extremely rude
to any Japanese businessperson.
Personally I would have liked a note to say that these tips wouldn’t
be appropriate in every case or further explanation of when to use
them. The tips are a bit too concise for my liking and I feel that
it comes across as giving commandments for business communication
instead of suggestions that might be helpful. On a whole though and
taken as suggestions not to override experience of your own clients
culture and preferences, it will be helpful to your business,
whatever it might be. In the education sector though this book is
probably of most use to boards of trustees, principals or those
entrusted with marketing the school.

Make Your Database Your Goldmine by Debbie
Mayo-Smith
Productivity expert Debbie Mayo-smith
claims she has the answers to increasing sales, improving customer
service, improving business value and saving a company time in this
new book. In it she shows readers how they can use their existing
customer information for profitable marketing, customer service and
reporting initiatives.
It takes readers through everything they need to know about using a
database effectively for business using readily available and common
computer programmes. There are even screen shots to help the reader
know what is being said in the text. It is written to be easily
understood and there are also real life examples to show how
effective the things mentioned in this book are. It opens with
strategies and tips for improving existing data collection and
usage, then moves on to how you can save time working with the data
before finally concluding with how you can get the information you
want immediately and use it to your company’s best advantage.
Although this book is targeted primarily at commercial businesses,
schools may also find it useful (with some adaptation of ideas) to
better inform parents of what is happening in the school, keep in
tough with ex students, and for targeting parents of prospective
students. It is also a useful book for those interested in business
studies or Information Technology as it shows how programmes like
excel can be used in a real world business model to improve
productivity and marketing potential.
