Understanding NCEA by Irena Madjar and Elizabeth McKinley

NCEA is an educational system unfamiliar to most parents. It is complex and allows students a lot of flexibility in what they study but how they are assessed. It can also allow students to drift off the most appropriate educational pathways and take what they may see as easier options but will get no benefit from

Many parents may feel that you need a book to understand NCEA, and at last here it is. This relatively short and useful guide has been written specifically for parents. It aims to cut through some of the complex issues surrounding NCEA and its assessment to give parents the skills and knowledge they need to help their children make the best choices for their future career path.

Understanding NCEA is also written for students about to start NCEA to help them make the right choices and reach their educational goals. The book uses case studies to show the importance of planning right from year 11 and that the choice of optional subjects really does matter. Students might not realise that not all subjects in year 13 count towards UE and they will need to ensure their choices in year 11 follow on to approved courses in year 13 if they want a career that will require further training when they leave school.

After the first section on coming to terms with NCEA, the book is divided into chapters specifically aimed at different fields a student might hope to get a job in. Through the use of case studies, and pointers, students can learn from the mistakes of others and the correct choices they also made to develop a plan for themselves on what subjects they should take from year 11 to year 13. There is also a handy section which informs parents what they can do to improve their children's chances of not only achieving all three levels of NCEA but to be on track for they the future career they want.

Understanding NCEA is essential reading for any students about to start their first year of NCEA and their parents.
