The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore

The Power of Six is the second book in the series that started with the intriguingly named I Am Number Four. If you have not read the previous book though, all is briefly explained in the first few pages of the first chapter while adding new characters for those who have read the first book (or seen the movie).

For those who don't know the series, the nine Guarde of Lorien have arrived on earth and have hidden, only to be hunted when they start helping people. Three of them were killed, before a fourth one realised what was happening. Now the story is told by Marina, who has been hiding with her mother in a convent in Spain.

Marina has heard the story of John Smith from Ohio and feels he is one of them. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign Marina has been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from Marina's dreams that has powers beyond anything she could ever imagine and just might be strong enough to bring the remaining six together?

While there is enough information given in this book for readers to skip the first one, I do recommend people to read 'I am Number Four' first as the series is a progression of the story and it is a riveting read. The Power of Six continues in the same way, showing why the first novel made such an exciting movie, but now it is no longer just one boy on his own. It is a book that is hard to put down and will have readers eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.
