Calling The Gods by Jack Lasenby

Calling The Gods is the tale of a young woman's heroism and persistence against impossible odds. Jack Lasenby takes the reader on a haunting, frightening and inspiring journey to a post apocalyptic New Zealand. Banishment is the cruellest punishment handed out by society, and her own people are driving out Selene unjustly.

It is a story for older readers, a return to the earlier darker style of some of Lasenby's tales. It is a thought-provoking look at what it takes to form a community and survive unsupported. It also reflects Lasenby's strong views about social justice and his dislike of inequality.

Calling The Gods is a story of violence, love and courage, of leadership and betrayal. It also shows that extraordinary human trait of being able to adapt and survive. It is a breathtaking read, a dark and riveting tale for those who enjoy novels with deeper meaning.

The Haystack by Jack Lasenby

The Haystack is set in the little Waikato dairying township of Waharoa during the 1930’s depression. Maggie is growing up without her mother and must make do with her father and friends and neighbours for company.

Through the eyes of a young girl, readers find out what the depression was like and some of the hardships faced by people. This is not a depressing story though. It is told with humour. Maggie’s father makes the most of what they have and they are better off than some. It tells off a simpler time, when everyone knew all the gossip in the town, shopkeepers gave treats to little girls for visiting them (like luncheon sausage or a stamp on their hand) and also when you had to be rich to own a washing machine.

Maggie has a good imagination and is always tormenting Freddie Jones. But she also is constantly being harassed by Mrs Dainty, a woman who always seems to be there when Maggie does something she shouldn’t.

The book is divided into chapters with humorous and interesting titles, but really flows well as a story making it easy to read, hard to put down and easy to make real progress with.
