All Blacks Don’t Cry: A story of hope by John Kirwan

John Kirwan was one of the most devastating wingers ever to put on the All Black shirt. He was a prominent and revered figure at the dawn of the professional age of rugby. It seemed he lived a charmed life and that he was unshakable, but behind closed doors, JK was living a tormented life and one which he at first felt the need to hide.

Although he was a high profile sportsman and people would have thought things couldn’t have been better for him, JK suffered from depression for many years. Every day became a superhuman struggle to seem normal, and he was terrified of what he might become, do or loose.

He managed to survive by reaching out and seeking help from those closest to him. It took a while for him to seek this help, but when he did he realised that he should have done it as soon as he stated to get the panic attacks. When he acknowledged he had a problem, he started his first steps to wellness, and importantly found the hope that things could get better. Holding onto this hope got JK through his depression.

This book helps readers who suffer from depression to realise that they are not alone and they can recover and lead a normal life. It gives them hope to hang onto also. He gives an inspirational and helpful example from a high profile personality that seemingly exemplified what most NZ men wanted to become. Men especially will find this book a great help as it shows that talking about feelings or seeking help doesn’t make you any less of a man.

All Blacks Don’t Cry also helps to raise awareness of depression and will help others to understand this affliction. It will perhaps also help them to help anyone around them who suffers from depression.
