Rudyard Kipling: Three Kipling classics complete and unabridged by Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard is an author who needs no introduction, primarily thanks to his very popular book, ‘The Jungle Book’. This omnibus contains both Jungle book volumes plus his other Indian classic, Kim. Each is Kipling’s complete and uncut story, showing his ability for telling, enthralling, entertaining and timeless stories.

In the story of Kim, Kipling draws on his own childhood memories and the people he encountered in India when he was young. The Wonder House described in the early pages of Kim is actually the Lahore Museum, where his father was appointed as curator and the ‘Sahib with a white beard is actually his father. His stories are thought provoking and sometimes questioning of aspects of our society.

The introduction contained in this book is as much about dispelling the myths around Kipling as it is about introducing the stories, both of which are done very well. It gives the reader great insight into the author, his life and background as well as the ideas for these books and some of the hidden messages contained in them.

The Jungle Books are collections of stories including the adventures of the ‘man cub’, Mowgli who was raised by wolves in the jungle and is befriended by other creatures including a bear. The books also tell other stories like that one about ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’ the mongoose who battles with cobras to save a human family and the one (Servants of the Queen) which sees animal soldiers talking about their roles in battle. The Second Jungle Book in particular though follows Mowgli’s story and various adventures which see him finding a king’s treasure, being banished from a human village and tempted to leave the jungle forever.

Kim tells the story of the son of an Irish soldier who graduates from being a beggar in the streets of Lahore to becoming one of the most important secret agents in India.
