Christmas In The Bush by Lindy Kelly and illustrated by Lyn Kriegler

Josh is going to spend his first Christmas on his father's new farm and has been really looking forward to it, but when he arrives there are no decorations and worse still no presents. Does Christmas not come to the bush?

He even has to do chores on Christmas day. Could this be the worst Christmas ever? Maybe his dad has a trick or two that will turn the day around.

This is a story about estranged parents and a dad making the most of the short time he gets to spend with his son by giving him a Christmas adventure he will never forget. It is a delightful story with fantastic, distinctly New Zealand illustrations.

Lost In The Bush: Keeping yourself safe in New Zealand’s great outdoors by Lindy Kelly with illustrations by Pauline Wimp

This book has two parts to it. The first is the story of Sam, who lives with his grandfather near the bush. He knows he isn’t to go into the bush, but his grandfather has also told him some tips for surviving if you do get lost in the bush. When out picking plums with his grandfather’s dog Tuffy, Tuffy runs into the bush after a hare. It leaves Sam in a dilemma, does he stay where he is and loose his grandfather’s dog or follow it into the bush? He decided to follow Tuffy, and soon finds that he is lost. Will he able to remember all that his grandfather taught him and will he be found?

The second part of this book gives young readers tips on travelling safely in the New Zealand bush. There is also some very helpful advice on what to do if you get lost in the bush. This section also has some fun activities that children can do to reinforce the messages provided.

The illustrations depict New Zealand’s bush and rural areas well. They combine well with the story making it a book that children will want to read. It is a fun and informative book. The story at the start of the book will also help children remember what they should do if they become lost.
