Legends Of The Cook Islands by Shona Hopkins with illustrations by Bruce Potter

From the first look at the size of this book, it seems unlikely that it contains any more than a couple of legends, let alone eight, but don’t be confused by it’s appearance. From the cover, size and shape it might look like a normal picture book, but once you open it, you will find more words than a picture book usually contains and some pages filled with text and little more than a small design as illustration. It is therefore a book that either adults read to children or older, more accomplished readers can read, but it is not a book where young children can read along and follow the story with the pictures.

This book does however show the Cook Islanders’ rich history for telling amazing and captivating oral legends. Some of these legends explain why some things are the way they are, some explain aspects of the Cook Islands culture and some give good morals, but all are interesting. It is a great way to learn about some of the culture of the Cook Islands, and a glossary at the back translates some of the words into English. It is a book to treasure.
