The Dead by
Charlie Higson
A terrible disease is striking everyone over the age of fourteen and
nowhere is safe. Maxie, Blue and the rest of the Holloway crew
aren’t the only ones trying to escape the ferocious adults who prey
on them.
Jack and Ed are best friends but they have their friendship tested
as they join a mismatched group of other kids and go on the run. Not
all among the group are children though as amongst the nerds,
fighters and misfits is one adult, a butcher called Greg who claims
he is immune to the disease.
If this group of children are going to survive, they must work
together, but as a new disaster threatens to overwhelm London, they
realise they won’t all survive.
Charlie Higson is a big fan of horror films and hopes this book will
give many children over the age of twelve sleepless nights. The Dead
is the prequel to The Enemy and as such can be read on its own or
after you have read the other book.

The Fear by Charlie Higson
The Fear is the third book in Charlie Higson's The Enemy series. If
you are not familiar with the series, it is set in the future, when
adults have been struck with a disease that rots their flesh and
makes them eat children. Everyone over the age of fourteen is the
enemy. The series is thrilling, chilling and not for the faint
hearted.
The previous book ends with Dognut telling Ed he is going to leave
the Tower of London to look for Brooke, now in The Fear, Dognut,
Courtney and their friends, including some new characters, set off
across London to find Brooke and her crew, but the Enemy is growing
stronger. Each of them has a different reason for joining the quest.
On the way they see how other children have been surviving including
a group who have set up their own parliament in Westminster and
another group who are trying to discover how the disease works.
This book will reunite readers with some old friends, introduce some
new friends and see them encounter a sick and dangerous new villain,
the Collector. The collector s an obese man who collects things like
DVDs, magazines, televisions, computers and children. To him
children are just toys that break too easily.
The Enemy series is one that readers really need to work their way
through, starting at the first book. The Fear actually starts five
days before the end of The Dead and unlike the previous books, it
also focuses on an adult character. Like the other books though, it
is filled with twists, surprises and rivalries.
If you like tales of zombies or a world where the only normal people
are under the age of fourteen, then you will enjoy this book and the
rest of the series, which incidentally has been extended from three
to six books at this stage.
