The Bridge by Jane Higgins

The Bridge is an adventure for young adults, set in a future world where people live in fear of outsiders. ISIS (the Internal Security and Intelligence Services) has been set up to defend Cityside from the hostiles of Southside. Nik is very smart and ISIS only recruits the best, but why does ISIS reject Nik?

Before he can find out, the school is bombed and the hostiles have not only taken the bridges but have kidnapped the brother of Nik's friend Ffyfe. Now Nik and Ffyfe must cross the bridge to save Sol

The Bridge will have readers intrigued from the start. A war rages between two sides of the same city. Citysiders see the occupants of Southside as heathens and uncivilised. The society presented in Cityside is vaguely reminiscent of the darkest days of Communist Russia, where people had their occupations decided by the government, and the decision could not be contradicted. Readers might also get the feeling early on that Nik and the others have had their views of the hostiles distorted by years of propaganda.
