The Tulip Virus by Danielle Hermans

In 1638 Holland, Wouter Winckel is brutally slaughtered and his body is found in the barroom of his inn with an anti-religious pamphlet in his mouth.

Winckel was a respected tulip trader and owned the most beautiful collection of the flower in the United Republic of the Low Countries. In his ownership was the most expensive and coveted bulb of them all, the Semper Augustus. Could a flower be the motive for murder, and even if it is, who would want him dead?

In 2007, history seems to be repeating itself when Dutchman Frank Schoeller is found in his home by his nephew, Alec. Just before he dies he points to a rare 17th century book about tulips. How could this be a clue to his murder?

Alec sets out to find his uncle’s killer and is soon drawn into a dangerous world with a murderer on the loose, putting his life and the lives of his friends in real and present danger.

The Tulip Virus is a fast paced, captivating and thrilling murder mystery. Even though there are two mysteries and stories throughout this book, it isn’t hard to know what one is which, yet they are not disjointed, and at times seamlessly meld together. Readers will even get a bit of a lesson on the tulip industry thrown in. It is actually based on the real life events of the Tulip Bubble in 17th century Holland. It is a tale of fundamentalism and freedom, also the dark fruits of greed, pride and arrogance.
