At The Lake by Jill Harris

Two brothers, Simon and Jem are excited to start their summer holiday with their granddad at the lake. They have been going there every year, but this is the first year they are their without their Dad. He left them to start a new life in Australia the previous January. The lake is a familiar place to them, they know all of the bays, the best swimming holes the bush and the neighbouring farms.

This year is different though as there have been changes and some parts are no longer known to them like a former farm that is now a house removal business guarded by an imposing fence, a menacing guard and a terrifying guard dog. What are the fences really hiding and why do the farm caretaker and his wife seem so scared?

Simon also has some scores to settle with Jem, even though their mother has warned that she is running out of patience with their fighting. Why is Simon so mean to Jem? Will it not be a good holiday after all?

One thing that is guaranteed to happen on the holiday is adventure and the stage is set right from the first chapter when the changes to the farm are mentioned. Firther intrigue is added when Simon spots two strange children on the shores of a bay he regarded as his bay. This is soon followed by a meeting with the guard at the farm, and from that moment, readers are definitely hooked. Boys over nine will particularly enjoy this book, especially those who like realistic and intriguing adventure.
