An Afternoon In Summer by Kathy Guiffre

When American Kathy Guiffre decided to take her two small sons to Rarotonga for a year to escape her failed marriage and second failed relationship, she took the biggest gamble of her life. She also saw it as a change to her high stress life as a working single mother. But leaving a comfortable position as a university lecturer in Colorado for an Island she had know idea about let alone know anyone in was a big risk to take just to make a new start.

When she arrives, she finds it is a bigger risk than she first thought as the house she was promised doesn’t eventuate and almost every other outsider is on a ten day package tour. Her unlikely saviour is an 82 year old Maori woman named Emily. She has a large house on the edge of the ocean, which is shared with two callous missionaries, the ghosts of Emily’s ancestors and briefly with a bizarre Eastern European couple.

Over time, Kathy falls in love with the island and embraced by its people. An Afternoon In Summer is an inspirational book about searching for something different in life even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone, and finding something better than you could dream of. It is the story of finding serenity, sensuality and ultimately love.
