The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory

Philippa Gregory is the master of the historical novel, making historical characters and events larger than life with her enthralling novels. She started showed her credentials with her bestseller ‘The Other Boleyn Girl, and has now started a series looking at the family that preceded the Tudors, the Plantagenets, a family of complex rivalries, loves and hatreds. For those of you who enjoyed ‘The White Queen’, this book looks at the same period in history from another angle and perspective. Both books are part of ‘The Cousin’s War’ series. The Cousin’s War was the original name for the War of the Roses.

The Red Queen tells the story of Margaret Beaufort, the bride of Edmund Tudor. Margaret was a religious fanatic whose life was devoted to God and to getting her son on the throne, however tenuous his claim. She had no love life except for when it was expedient to her goal. In this book, the woman much hated becomes sympathetic, intelligent, courageous and fascinating.

In this novel, Margaret uses her determination of character and wily schemes to infiltrate the House of York and ensure that her only son, Henry Tudor, triumphs as King of England. Of course this instigates one of the greatest dynasties ever known, the Tudors.

The new perspective makes a very interesting and fascinating novel for those who like reading of history and struggles for power.
