Battlefields Of The New Zealand Wars: A Visitor’s Guide by David Green

Battlefields Of The New Zealand Wars is not just a travel guide. It gives readers information on the historical and culturally significant sites relevant to the New Zealand Wars. Each chapter covers stories and accounts of the New Zealand Wars of 1843-1872.

It is not a detailed history but gives a broad overview that is handy and interesting when on a trip to and past some of these sites. It tells all the important information of what happened, when and where. The book also provides information about battlegrounds of importance while offering practical advice on how to get there, what to look out for and how to behave in a culturally sensitive way.

Relevant cemeteries, churches and non-New Zealand Wars sites are also mentioned broadening the focus to give a fuller picture of cultural context. Historians still debate many of the points in this piece of New Zealand history, but author David Green has tried to give readers a balanced account.

David Green is an historian and editor in the History Group of the Ministry for culture and Heritage in Wellington. He is especially interested in New Zealand’s war history, sports history and history of the public sector. This book will also be enjoyed by others interested in New Zealand’s history as well as those touring around the North Island and wanting to know a bit about the cultural conflicts of the past.
