The Limping Man by
Maurice Gee
The Limping Man is the third novel in
Maurice Gee’s exciting Salt series.
The Limping Man has killed Hana’s mother along with some other
women. He is a very powerful man, so powerful that nobody can
withstand it. It is a soft crawling that seeps into the skin and
wriggles into the mind. Anyone who has been overcome with his power
will love him no matter what his cruelties are.
Hana’s mother forced Hana into the burrows before she ate poison to
prevent being burned alive. After her mother dies, Hana still has
the last words her mother said going through her mind, but how can
she leave the only world she has ever known.
She flees the burrows and hides in the forest, where she meets Ben,
son of Lo. The two decide to journey back to the burrows and find a
way to destroy the Limping Man before his evil consumes the whole
world, but in order to do so, they must first find the secret of his
strength.
Like Salt and Gool, this is yet another riveting adventure set in a
strange land of compelling characters and an evil villain with
mystical powers. Although it can be read by itself, I would
recommend reading the whole series starting with Salt, as they are
all excellent adventures

Under The Mountain by
Maurice Gee
Twins Rachel and Theo Matheson both have red hair, but apart form
that, they think there is nothing remarkable about them. They have a
strange and awesome destiny however, to try and save the world from
the terror of what is under the mountain.
When Theo and Rachel head to Auckland to spend a fortnight with
their uncle and aunt, they are prepared for the usual entertainment
that the city can provide, but their relatives have curious
neighbours who seem to take an unusual interest in the twins. Then
once they meet the extraordinary Mr Jones, their holiday begins to
take a course of its own.
Beneath extinct volcanoes giant creatures are waking from a
spellbound sleep of several thousand years. Their goal is
destruction of the world. Time is running out. The Matheson twins,
chosen to oppose the monsters, know themselves to be as fallible as
any other eleven-year-olds.
The classic New Zealand story about strange creatures from under the
volcanoes of Auckland and the two children entrusted to stop them
from destroying the world has been re-released to co-inside with the
release of a new movie version of the book. Even though the book
hasn’t been modernised and today’s readers might need explanations
of things like what railcars are and why there was a toll gate on
the Harbour Bridge, the story in many ways remains timeless and is
sure to be enjoyed as much by today’s children as it was when it was
first published. Incidentally the toll was paid until 1984.
