Alamein by Iain Gale

Alamein is a name that will resonate with many New Zealanders, and if your thoughts of this place are of a battle in world War Two, you will know the setting for this novel. In October, 1942, Britain and its allies (including NZ) were in real difficulties; Germany and its Axis partners seemed to be triumphant everywhere. It was in North Africa that a stand was made that started to turn the tide of the war.

Alamein was a battle of strong characters and leaders. The Axis force was led by the famous battle commander Erwin Rommel, while the relatively untested but charismatic and tempestuous Bernard Montgomery was in charge of the Allied forces. For eleven days, both sides fought an extraordinary battle in unforgiving terrain, amid swirling sandstorms and the desert winds.

As with the battle itself, this novel is filled with strong characters, nine in all. They are based on real people, drawn from both sides of the conflict. Through them and others we see the flow of battle, the strategies, individual battles and skirmishes. Also evident is the extraordinary courage and determination of both sides. It is a superb novel that brings this conflict to life with personality and through the lives of individuals. It would also make an exciting and exhilarating movie.
