The Fry Chronicles: An autobiography by Stephen Fry

The Fry Chronicles gives an interesting and honest insight into one of the world’s most recognisable comedians as he moves from troubled teenager to student and teacher then finally writer and actor. It is inspiring and revealing, it shows that there is no prescribed way of becoming a famous comedian or actor and it also answers questions that many of us would like to know about the man like how did he meet Ben Elton, Rowan Aitkinson and of course Hugh Laurie.

Stephen gives rare insight into what it means to be gay and yet not fit into the gay scene, in a sense have self loathing and also to suffer from addictions. His book will also touch many of us who also feel that we are not quite good enough and perhaps are waiting to be caught out. It is a book about not only following your heart but also to be prepared to do the work needed to follow your heart.

This book will also challenge what you may (along with almost everyone else) think of Stephen Fry. He is not, as readers find out, a smug, confident actor, but suffers from self doubt, depression and envy. He has also not always led an exemplary life nor does he have the highly educated public school education that you might think, but actually spent time in jail and was suspended from a number of schools for reasons including truancy and stealing.

This book also provides what you might expect with anything written by Stephen Fry. It is humorous, witty and eloquently uses the English language as only he can. Above all else, The Fry Chronicles provides an interesting look at one man’s rise from troubled teenager and liar through respected teacher and Oxbridge university student to finally arriving as a comic and playwright. It is an excellent and entertaining read providing a comprehensive look into the private mind and thoughts of one of the most recognisable men on television.
