Thomas Forsyth had been a captain in the British Army until an Improvised Explosive Device in Afghanistan had seen him invalided out. The army had been his entire life to that point, and after his release from hospital he has nowhere to go and no idea of what to do with his life. As it is, he faces six months leave to go home, wherever that might be, as he has spent fifteen years living in army barracks, and even after that, the army might only take him back in a civilian capacity.

With no-where else to go, but with a determination to become fit for active service once again, Tom heads home to a mother he despises and a stepfather he hasn’t spoken to since he left home. When he arrives, he finds that he isn’t the only one with problems. His mother is a horse trainer and until recently a very successful one, but recently things have started to happen to change that. Tom witnesses a race where her prize horse and favourite finishes in last place, slowing to a walk when it crosses the finishing line, but that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Tom soon finds that training business is on the edge and facing a threat more dangerous than a run of bad form. He is on a very different battlefield, but the rules are the same, kill or be killed.

Crossfire is a gripping thriller from the master of suspense and intrigue. Dick Francis died in February this year, but this book along with three other collaborations shows his youngest son is ready to take up the mantle.
