This book is based on the events at Glencoe in Scotland. For those of you not familiar with them, on February 13th, 1692 The Campbell clan on orders from the English king massacred 38 members of the MacDonald clan at the clan’s traditional home. More Macdonalds fled into the snow and became lost or died from exposure. What made the massacre even more appalling was the fact that the Campbells had been at Glencoe sharing the hospitality of the Macdonalds and sheltering from the winter snow before the attack, which took place when the Macdonald clan were asleep.

In this novel, the title character, Corrag has been imprisoned forty miles to the south of Glencoe for her involvement in the massacre. She is accused of witchcraft and is awaiting her death sentence. Lonesome and cold, she tells her story to a man who visits her. It is a story of passion, courage, kindness and the magic of the natural world. By telling it, she transforms both their lives.

Susan Fletcher gives a different spin on the events from a viewpoint not told before. It is an epic novel about an epic event in Scottish history. An event that is still a sore point with some Scots.
