Stories From Our Night Sky by Melanie Drewery with illustrations by Jenny Cooper

Stories From Our night Sky is a collection of stories and poems about our southern skies. From the legends of Matariki and Rona through to how tuatara made the stars, Melanie Drewery weaves magic into these stories of legend that have often been passed from generation to generation. Readers won’t look at the night sky in the same way again, but see it as a place of magic and wonder.

Most of the stories in this book are from Maori legend, and Melanie is one of the few authors writing about these legends that acknowledges that stories and names change from tribe to tribe. In a lot of cases the stories in the book appear as a story being told to a family member, just as these stories have been passed on through the generations.

Most of the stories are told in English. But there are some poems with Maori translations including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Tirama Tirama Nga Whetu. The colourful illustrations capture the magic of the stories contained in the book, although unlike first appearances, there are fewer pages with pictures than there are pages where illustrations are just decorations around the edge of the text, making it a book that you read to young readers rather than letting them read themselves. It does provide a good introduction to some of the myths and legends of the stars and sky however.
