Disney Alice In Wonderland

This is the book of the movie, and for those of you that don’t know, the movie differs from the original Lewis Carroll book as it is set when Alice is nineteen and accidentally returns to Underland (which is misheard by Alice to be ’Wonderland’), the place she went to in her childhood. When she returns she is told she is the only one who can slay Jabberwocky, a dragon like creature controlled by the tyrannical and evil Red Queen.

Jabberwocky is the creature that keeps the Red Queen in power, without it, her sister the White Queen and the inhabitants of Underworld would surely rise against her. Both the Red Queen and her Jabberwocky terrorise the inhabitants of Underworld and she is not about to let her reign go. She finds out of Alice’s destiny and is determined to stop her. But Alice also has friends, can they help her and can she free Underworld from the terrible reign of the Red Queen?

The book (and movie) is an extension of Carroll’s books ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and ‘Through The Looking Glass’ although disappointingly while saying the book is based on Tim Burton’s film and Linda Woolverton’s screenplay, there is no mention on these two books from which the setting and characters are drawn. This may be because Burton sees his film as neither a sequel nor re-imagining of the previous films. He does none-the-less though use characters and places Lewis Carroll created. This book is a lot darker than the original books by Carroll and obviously intended for an older audience, but to me still does have the feel as an attempt at a sequel. Alice no-longer is just an observer but interacts with the characters and has a dangerous task to complete.
