Young MacDonald Had A Farm by Anna Crosbie with illustrations by Scott Tulloch

This is a modern kiwi take of the old nursery rhyme ‘Old MacDonald Had A Farm’. Old MacDonald has retired but his son, Young MacDonald has taken over, bringing in new equipment and modernising the farm. While he is extremely busy, he still has time to arrange a wonderful family surprise.

For some, it might actually have memories of a skit with Billy T James and Peter Rowley modernising the same story. The text might not be as funny as that provided by the comic duo, but the idea of updating the story to make it more relevant to a new generation interested in technology is still there. The twist at the end of the story is particularly good and something that was lacking in the original.

Scott Tulloch’s wonderful illustrations add to the entertainment value of the book, and the distinctly kiwi feel. As with all Scott’s illustrations, they are detailed and reflect their setting well. They also tell their own story sometimes adding humour and sometimes providing a hidden story behind the text.

The flowing, modern rhyme, modern take on a classic rhyme, and New Zealand flavour make Young MacDonald Had A Farm a story that New Zealand children will cherish. The text and illustrations make it particularly appealing to any children who love machinery and technology.

Young MacDonald Goes To The Show by Anna Crosbie with illustrations by Scott Tulloch

This sequel to Young MacDonald Had a Farm sees Young MacDonald head to the show to strive to win a prize. He and his dog have entered in enough competitions, but will they win a Best in Show trophy.

Once again, Scott Tulloch’s wonderful illustrations add to the story by telling a lot more than the words do. The text is one that children can easily read, learn and remember, while the pictures will keep children interested and warrant discussion on the story they tell.

Young MacDonald Goes To The Show is a fun and enjoyable read for young readers, as well as providing a great sing-along story for the class.
