Artemis Fowl And The Atlantis Complex by Eion Colfer

This is the latest novel in the series written by Eion Colfer about the teenage criminal mastermind Artemis Foul II. If you have not read the previous stories and are not familiar with him, Artemis Fowl is a ruthless and intelligent young human criminal whose motivation is money. To gain wealth he comes up with a variety of illegal schemes. Not all the characters in the books are human though.

Artemis’s first attempt to gain a fortune meant that he kidnapped a leprechaun to ransom for gold, and in doing so found a secret. Leprechauns are not like they are in the storybooks. They are high tech creatures with attitude and members of an elite fairy police force, the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance Unit or LEPrecon. And since he kidnapped their first female police captain, they have been out to ruin his schemes. That was until he proved innocent of something and they were able to help each other. Both parties struck an uneasy truce, underpinned by growing respect for each other and underpinned by a shared sense of humour.

When Arthemis summons the elite group of fairies to Iceland to present his invention to save the world from global warming, they notice something is different, he has changed, he has become nice.

The Fairies diagnose Atlantis Complex, what we know as multiple personality disorder. Dabbling in magic has damaged his mind. Now the subterranean city of Atlantis is also under attack from vicious robots and nice Artemis cannot fight them. Can Fairy ally and LEPrecon captain Holly Short get the real Artemis back before the city is destroyed along with every fairy in it?

You don’t need to read the other books in the Artemis Series to enjoy this one, although they are all exciting and humorous adventures, well worth reading, especially if you like something different. As with all the other novels in the series there are plenty if twists to surprise readers and the action will ensure this instalment is hard to put down.
