This book might not be the definitive reference about all the saints that ever lived but it does contain the life stories of 30 Christian saints who lived in the first ten centuries after the birth of Jesus Christ. Coffey, a retired general surgeon, felt compelled to write about the courage shown by these men and women.

Saints of Old is the result of Coffey's extensive research and tells stories that have spanned the centuries. Each chapter covers a new saint, showing why they are loved, revered and admired, also what we can learn from their lives. At the end of many of the chapters Coffey adds his own endnotes, which in some cases give a more personal note to the commentary or in others say what influence the particular saint has had after death.

Saints of Old is an inspiring and interesting book which shows that saints are not mythical inventions but real people who walked the world doing good works. It is also interesting to read about the difference between some of the real saints and our perception of them today. Saints of Old is a book of particular interest to those interested in faiths or social history.
