Kiwi Rock
Chicks, Pop Stars and Trailblazers by Ian Chapman
Kiwi Rock Chicks, Pop Stars and Trailblazers is an overdue tribute
to the women of New Zealand music. It features 54 of New Zealand’s
remarkable, top performing artists, spanning 50 years. Artists
featured include Anika Moa, Bic and Boh Runga, Brooke Fraser, Carly
Binding, Fiona McDonald, Gin Wigmore, Hera, Jenny Morris, Julia
Deans, Shona Laing, Moana Maniapoto, Sharon O’Neil, When The Cat’s
Away and The Topp Twins. They share their memories, hopes, dreams,
triumphs and tragedies, some for the first time. They also give
first hand personal insights into an industry dominated by men and
by image.
Through the book, readers will learn that the music industry is not
all fortune, glamour, travel and fun, but also requires a lot of
hard work some luck and also sometimes heartbreak. It is an
inspirational read for any young women wanting to make it in the
music industry. It is also a book that Ian Chapman hopes will
encourage readers to revisit the music of women artists they have
enjoyed in the past and give new insight into the music of those
they listen to now. Each chapter includes a discography and awards
list of the artist featured.
Chapman admits that choosing the artists for this book was less than
scientific. While some have cut it on the international scene,
others are just famous here in NZ. The only guideline Chapman admits
to was to keep the selection within the genres of rock, pop and
crossover. Some were selected because their profiles and
achievements were of such magnitude that they had to be included,
others were selected though personal preference. The scope of the
book also grew as word of mouth spread and people suggested artists
who should be included.
Whether you want to learn more about some of New Zealand’s great
female artists, want to learn more about your favourite singer, are
interested in how the music industry works or just want inspiration
to keep learning the guitar, this is an excellent read. It is truly
a celebration to the women in the NZ Music industry and to Kiwi
music in general.
