 Quin Majik and the Tidy Secret Catastrophe by Fleur Beale with illustrations by Philip Webb

Quin Majik is a young boy who loves to invent things and take things apart to be used in a new way, it is therefore not very surprising that he is not well liked in the ultra conservative Tidy Street, where he lives. It is a fictional street that would make the most boring of households look interesting, as girls are only allowed to play with dolls and boys are only allowed to play tiddlywinks. Tiddlywinks –how boring is that?

One of the residents of the street starts a petition to get the Majik family removed because they are such a bad influence and Quin’s response is to come up with a scheme to liberate the Tidy Street children from their boredom. That mightn’t really tackle the problem at hand, but at least Quin and his friend Fred will have some fun.

This book may not be any literary great but it is a humorous book with short chapters and a flow to it that almost make the chapters superfluous. In its own way it also makes fun of the way political correctness constrains freedoms.
