The Compact Guide To Christian History by Stephen Backhouse

Part of Lion's Compact guide series, this handy reference book provides essential information on the growth and impact of Christianity from the apostles to the present day. The author, Dr Stephen Backhouse lectures in Social and Political theology at St Melitus College in London (the recent amalgamation of St Paul's at HTB and the North Thames Theological College), after previously teaching at McGill and Oxford universities.

The encyclopaedia is organised century by century, going through the major events, changes and personalities that have shaped Christianity around the world. It focuses not only on the Western World but takes a broad survey of global Christianity, for example the chapter on the 16th century not only focuses on the Lutheran reformation, but also the shift of power in the Orthodox Church from Constantinople to Rome.

The resulting book is a very readable, short, illustrated and informative guide to the impact that Christianity has had on history and the impact history has had on Christianity. Unlike most books on the formation of Christianity, it doesn't just focus on one church or the Western world. The author has also attempted to separate fact from hearsay, myth and prejudice that tends to surround history of this topic.
