The Price Of Bacon by Jeanette Aplin

Living on the isolated and beautiful D'Urville Island, Jeanette Aplin faces many challenges from not having electricity or roads to the house, to only being able to keep in contact with friends and family by solar powered computer. She faces a myriad of dilemmas and adventures and most she has to face alone as her husband works away for long periods.

For company, she decides to keep a pair of Kunekune pigs. Strong bonds develop, leading to complications when the pigs start to multiply. She is faced with the problem of what to do next and has to decide whether she is a farmer or if the pigs are just pets.

This book is about a person's love affair with a place and its wildlife too, not to mention the love she has for her husband and family. It tells readers of the struggles and trials of living in a remote island with access to things we take for granted and most of us couldn't dream to be without.

Jeanette tells this story with the same candid frankness and sense of humour as the previous two books about her life, making it a delight to read and taking readers on an interesting journey into a place and life completely unfamiliar to them. It showcases a unique part of New Zealand and a life that is very different.
